On Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence exhibited by machines. In computer science, the field of AI research defines itself as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal.[1] Colloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving".[2]

PROFESSOR Stephen Hawking has warned that artificial intelligence could be the worst thing that has ever happened to the human race.

The 74-year old believes that the rise of artificially intelligent machines could prove disastrous for humanity.
However, theoretical physicist Hawking, who has said in the past that “the development of full Artificial Intelligence could spell the end of the human race”, says that it could also be the best thing that has happened to us.
Speaking at the unveiling of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, a £10million collaboration between the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London, and Berkeley, Professor Hawking said: “The potential benefits of creating intelligence are huge.

Police in Durham are preparing to go live with an artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to help officers decide whether or not a suspect should be kept in custody.
