Growth in the eurozone came to a halt in the three months to June, raising fears of a triple-dip recession and piling pressure on the European Central Bank to launch a quantitative easing or asset purchase scheme.
Russian tit-for-tat sanctions against Europe over Ukraine and the threat of deflation have led to fears that the single currency bloc may contract again in the third quarter, after it flat-lined in the three months to June.
Germany's Federal Statistics Office said the economy was "losing momentum".
Another recession would be the third since 2009.
