From Italian Mafia. Perhaps from Italian mafia (“spirit of hostility to the law”) or from Sicilian mafia (“boldness, bravado”). See the Wikipedia article for more discussion of the origin of the word.

From Sicilian, of uncertain origin.[1] Most likely from Arabic مَاجَاس (mājās, “bragging, boasting, aggressive”)[2], though French mafler (“to devour, gluttonize”) is considered another possible source.
