[2]Schwarz Gruppe GmbH is a private family-owned German retail group which owns and operates the Lidl andKaufland brands. It is the second largest retailer in the world behind WalMart in terms of revenues. It is often regarded as Germany's top employer and Europe's top retailer.
German Schwarz, which owns chains Lidl and Kaufland, has surpassed French Carrefour as Europe's largest supermarket company. Schwarz Gruppe's turnover grew 7% in its past fiscal year, up to 79.3 billion euro.
Dieter Schwarz (born 24 September 1939) is a German entrepreneur and owner of the Schwarz-Gruppe. He is the chairman and CEO of the supermarket chain Lidl and the hypermarket chain Kaufland. As of February 2014, he is ranked as 23rd richest person in the world in the Hurun Report Global Rich List.[2]He is also regarded as "The Richest Man in Germany".
After the death of his father Josef Schwarz in 1977, he took control of the Schwarz & Lidl discount chain. Soon afterwards, he bought the naming rights from the co-owner Ludwig Lidl, who was a former schoolteacher.[3]
