Last week, while promoting gay rights in the Ukraine, John 

told the BBC that he would like to speak with Putin about his “isolating and prejudiced” attitude towards gay people.

“I would like to meet [Mr Putin],” John told BBC. “It's probably pie in the sky . . . He may laugh behind my back when he shuts the door, and call me an absolute idiot, but at least I can think I have the conscience to say I tried.”

According to the Times, “some have speculated that Mr. John was the victim of a prank call.”
