Hebrew belongs to the West Semitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family.
The earliest examples of written Paleo-Hebrew date from the 10th century BCE.[10]
Professor Gershon Galil of the department of biblical studies at the University of Haifa has deciphered an inscription dating from the 10th century BCE (the period of King David's reign), and has shown that this is a Hebrew inscription. The discovery makes this the earliest known Hebrew writing.

Gershon Galil
is Professor of Biblical Studies and Ancient History and former chair of the Department of Jewish History at the University of Haifa, Mount Carmel, Haifa, Israel. He received his doctorate at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. His work, The Chronology of the Kings of Israel and Judah,[1] suggests a new chronology for the kings of ancient Israel and ancient Judah.
