Purim Katan 2014

In this study I would like to examine the minor holiday of Purim Katan - פּוּרִים קָטָן. Purim Katan means little, or minor, Purim.

Purim Katan will occur on the following dates:

• Jewish Year 5774: sunset February 13, 2014 - nightfall February 14, 2014

Shushan Purim Katan is the day after Purim katan.

The fact that Purim Katan is in Adar Rishon indicates that this year is a leap year, the idea of which is to reconcile the difference between the solar and lunar years in the Jewish, or Biblical calendar. 

When the Jewish calendar has 13 months instead of the usual 12 it is known as a “pregnant year”. It is as if the year is pregnant and carrying an additional month in its belly. Thus, the additional month, called Adar rishon, which is actually the 12th month (not the 13th as one might think), is called the “month of pregnancy”.

Therefore, when we choose to use the term “Purim Katan”, we are emphasizing that it has an aspect in which it is smaller than Purim, yet it comes first.

The prosecutor is the chief legal representative of the prosecution in countries with either the common law adversarial system, or the civil law inquisitorial system. The prosecution is the legal party responsible for presenting the case in a criminal trial against an individual accused of breaking the law.

Friday, 02-14-14 - Ukraine: A Maidan government or nothing says opposition

Protesters marched on Independence Square Maidan in Kyiv after staging a one-hour strike on Thursday called by an opposition leader and ex-boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko.
 

 The walk-out came on the final day of the visit by the EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele. He had talked of the need for a new “inclusive government”. The opposition reiterated its stance on any compromise. They want to form “Maidan Government”.

“As for the post of prime minister there is no need to try and barter government portfolios with the opposition. Our position is clear, we do not accept the prime minister’s chair we will only accept the full responsibility of the country which means forming the cabinet of ministers,” Arseny Yatsenyuk Leader of the Fatherland Opposition Party told reporters.

Purim - ‘New Dawn’ of Revolutionary Consciousness.

Most of the organised units of the Maidan Samooborona (self-defence) forces, though, are under the leadership of Andriy Parubiy, a nationalist-leaning MP from Arseniy Yatseniuk's Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party. These are the volunteers guarding the barricades, wearing protective clothing and carrying makeshift weapons.

It could have been the most joyous day of the year. Instead, “Little Purim” is an almost ordinary day, with no special observances associated with it. Almost, but not quite ...
