taip?A huge container ship that has been wedged in the Suez Canal since Tuesday has finally been freed from the shoreline.
However, it is not clear yet when full traffic in the canal can resume.
The blockage has been the source of much worry and frustration for the global shipping industry.
We take a look at the key numbers that have been involved in the operation.
The Ever Given is 400m-long (1,312ft) and weighs 200,000 tonnes, with a maximum capacity of 20,000 containers. It is currently carrying 18,300 containers.
Ever Given[note 1] is a Golden-class container ship, one of the largest container ships in the world. The ship is owned by Shoei Kisen Kaisha (a shipowning and leasing subsidiary of the large Japanese shipbuilding company Imabari Shipbuilding), and is time chartered and operated by container transportation and shipping company Evergreen Marine headquartered in Luzhu District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan.[6] Ever Given is registered in Panama, and its technical management is the responsibility of the German ship management company Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM).[7]
On 23 March 2021, while traveling from Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia[8] to Rotterdam, Netherlands, the ship ran aground in the Suez Canal, blocking it. It remained in place for six days, before salvage crews were able to free it on the 29th of March.
